The grading allocated to a trip is a guide only which is designed to assist you in matching a proposed trip with your vehicle's ability, the skill level of the driver or the degree of difficulty you want to experience.
It also indicates what level of recovery gear you may need to carry just in case a recovery operation is required on yours or someone else's vehicle. All vehicles on Club trips should have front and rear recovery points and carry at least the basic recovery kit (snatch strap and two rated bow shackles) as well as a fire extinguisher. (This equipment is available to purchase from the Club's mobile shop at competitive prices.)
Be aware that a trip's grade may change without warning as a result of adverse weather conditions or unexpected obstacles.
| Grade |
Description |
| A |
An "A" grade trip
is considered to be extremely difficult. Participants will
have to be experienced at travelling over difficult terrain.
Winching and/or towing will almost definitely be required.
Participants will be required to bring along a certain amount
of recovery equipment. The trip leader will have the right
to reject a request from someone who is considered under-experienced. (Definitely no soft-roaders allowed! - unless you want to be used as "clean fill") |
| B |
This type of trip is considered
a moderate to difficult trip. Some winching and/or towing
should be expected. Under adverse weather conditions,
this trip could develop into a "A" Grade Trip. (Definitely no soft-roaders allowed!) |
| C |
This classification is considered
a moderate trip. Various sections of the trip may require
cautious driving in order to negotiate it, but in most circumstances,
winching should not be necessary. In adverse weather conditions,
a "C" grade trip could develop into a "B" grade trip. (Soft-roaders will only be allowed at the discretion of the Trip Leader) |
| D |
"D" grade trips are considered a relatively
easy and usually are touring trips on graded unsealed roads. It is unlikely that any recoveries would be required, but that does not preclude you from bringing along the basic kit. (Soft-roaders generally allowed, but check with Trip Leader) |
| E |
This trip is considered very easy
with little or no four-wheel driving involved. This type of
trip will usually consist of either an easy-to-get-to base
camp or a series of scenic tours. (Soft-roaders allowed, but confirm with Trip Leader) |
| W |
Walk - a horrid notion, but the best way to see some things and the only way to see others! |
